Contract upholstery: what specifiers ask
What makes a fabric 'contract grade' for upholstery?
A contract specification considers application, construction, seam performance, cleaning, colorfastness, pilling and documented fire performance. ACT’s voluntary woven-fabric guideline uses 30,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs or 40,000 Martindale cycles for commercial high-traffic/public spaces; coated fabrics use a separate guideline.
What Wyzenbeek score do I need for hotel lobby seating?
ACT’s voluntary guideline for woven fabrics uses 30,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs for commercial high-traffic/public spaces. A higher result does not predict proportionally longer service life; cleaning, maintenance, construction and the actual use are part of the decision.
Do I need Cal TB 133 for all hotel upholstery in California?
No. California repealed the TB 133 public-occupancy requirement effective January 22, 2019. A legacy or owner specification may still reference it. Confirm the current project requirement, TB 117-2013 component documentation and any complete-assembly criteria with the authority having jurisdiction.
What is the difference between solution-dyed and yarn-dyed upholstery fabric?
Solution-dyed fibers receive pigment during fiber production; yarn-dyed textiles are colored after the fiber is spun. Either construction still needs product-specific evidence for UV, chemical and cleaning performance. Do not infer bleach or disinfectant compatibility from the dye method alone.
Can upholstery fabric be cleaned with hospital-grade disinfectants?
Only use disinfectants named in the textile manufacturer’s current cleaning guidance, at the stated concentration and contact time. Fiber or coating type alone does not establish compatibility; verify the exact color and finish and follow the facility protocol.
